Amazon.com Product Description
No one wants to think about a fire in their home, but being prepared and recognizing signs of danger early can help keep you and your family alive and safe. The First Alert SA302CN Double Sensor Battery-Powered Smoke and Fire Alarm is equipped to detect smoke particles caused by both flaming and smoldering fires. For convenience, it allows you to mute false alarms remotely using any remote control and without compromising the alarm's functionality.

The First Alert Double Sensor Smoke and Fire Alarm:
  • Detects both flaming and smoldering fires with dual sensors.
  • Lets you mute false alarms with a remote control.
  • Emits a loud 85 dB alarm for ample warning.
  • Minimizes false alarms by detecting differences between real emergencies and non-threatening conditions.

Dual Sensor Technology For Maximum Protection
While all smoke alarms are designed to detect smoke, different sensing technologies react differently to certain types of fires. This alarm makes use of both ionization and photoelectric sensors to offer the earliest possible warning--regardless of the type of fire.

Sometimes a fire can smolder for hours before erupting into flames. Photoelectric Sensing Technology is more sensitive than Ionization Sensing Technology at detecting these sorts of smoldering fires, like those caused by cigarettes burning in couches or bedding.

Other fires erupt into flames quickly, like kitchen grease fires or fires fueled by paper burning in a wastebasket. Ionization Sensing Technology is generally more sensitive than Photoelectric Sensing Technology at detecting these sorts of flaming fires.

Loud Alarm and Reliable Construction for Peace of Mind
The loud, 85 dB alarm gets your attention quickly, so you can get out quickly or contain a minor fire before it spreads. Plus the smart dual sensor helps the detector recognize the difference between non-threatening conditions and real emergencies, so false alarms are minimized.

This smoke detector meets the UL 217 standard for dual-sensor home smoke detectors, which means that it has passed tough quality-assurance tests and can be depended on to offer reliable protection.

Remote Mute and Easy Battery Access for Safety and Convenience
To mute unnecessary alarms instantly, you can simply point almost any household remote control at the detector and click mute--whether the remote is for your TV, stereo, DVD player, or another appliance. The convenience of this feature means that something as simple as burnt toast never tempts you to take the battery out of your smoke detector and create an unsafe situation in your home. The mute button can also be used to test the alarm function, helping you ensure that your home and family are always protected.

This smoke detector is powered by a standard 9V battery (included). And, because a smoke detector is only effective if it is properly maintained, you'll appreciate that the EZ access battery door means there's no need to remove the alarm from your ceiling when it's time to change the battery.

This smoke detector's neutral, white finish blends in with your décor, and the unit measures just 5.7 x 5.7 x 2.8 inches. It is backed by a limited 10 year warranty.

3 out of 5 stars not bad   September 2, 2010
Mr. Martin S. Jones
I have owned these for about 8 years now. here are some of the things people should know.
The good,
easy to install
has both technology
remote testing

the bad,
it didn't get a star for lifespan of the equipment, i have not had one last for over 4 years.
I didn't give it another star for reliability, I had this and a model that was 15 to twenty years old next to each other and i cant remember what exactly happened but that old thing picked up the danger and i had time to neutralize the danger by fanning the smoke. I then shut off the old detector and the new one never did go off.

bottom line is this product is still in use today by me. i still buy them because of the dual technology. i am looking for its replacement though.

5 out of 5 stars First Alert Easy to Install and Safe   August 23, 2010
PSchwinn
The smoke detector was easy to install and test. We are looking forward to using our TV remote to turn it off when battery gets low. Also read an article saying that ionization alarms give off too many false alerts and don't detect very dangerous smoldering fires so that people should get photoelectric alarms. Glad our new alarm has both. See full article on safety at

Easy to install. Thank goodness haven't had a fire yet, but they went up well and seem to be of a good quality.

1 out of 5 stars Hyper-sensitivity   June 16, 2010

This detector is promoted "as microchip minimizes false alarms".
I am sorry to say that I am unable to use this particular detector.
It went off from a crock pot, hot water running, heated microwave being opened , dryer in basement being turned on,
and several times from unknown causes.
I changed the battery, which did not alter the hyper-senstivity. It is brand new out of the package.
The reason I got this detector is to alert me to kitchen situations, so at first it was put on the ceiling at the far end of kitchen furthest away from the stove.
I changed the location to an adjacent room.
There were then still alarm soundings for unknown causes, and the alarm sounded when an electric drill was used in that room.
I am disappointed and frustrated that this detector is too sensitive for use in my home.
I replaced this with an ionization detector of a different brand, which so far has not been set off by unknown
causes or false alarms.
