Where does carbon monoxide come from?
Two-in-One Alarm System Protects Your Family
The SC07CN is unique because it features two alarm systems that work independently to detect both evidence of fire and carbon monoxide (CO). Easily programmable, this device features separate audible and visible signals that indicate dangerous levels of smoke or CO.

For example, if a high level of CO is detected in your kitchen, you'll hear a clear message saying, "Warning: evacuate. Carbon monoxide in kitchen. Evacuate." You'll also hear a loud, 85-decibel alarm and see a flashing red LED that clearly indicates the nature of the threat. Together, these audible and visible signals let you know precisely where the danger is, so you can plan the safest possible escape route. This extra level of protection is something a standard alarm simply can't provide.

Powered by two 'AA' batteries (included), this alarm uses an electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor--the most accurate CO sensor available. It also uses photoelectric sensing technology, which provides optimal protection from smoldering fires and reduces false alarms like those caused by cooking smoke and shower steam. The SC07CN even stores CO readings and verbally communicates the highest level of CO detected, so you can easily discern patterns that indicate it's time to check your appliances or other combustible items for CO leaks.

For convenience, most household remote controls are compatible with this system, meaning you can quickly test or silence the alarm. Additionally, an alarm mute button silences unnecessary alarms and allows you to test alarm function. There's also a low-battery warning that indicates waning power--a low-battery mute quiets the low-battery signal for up to eight hours. Finally, an end-of-life alarm that tells you when it's time to replace the unit, and a side-access drawer makes for easy battery changes. This alarm comes with a five-year warranty.

Carbon Monoxide: The Leading Cause of Accidental Deaths in the U.S.
Carbon monoxide, an invisible, odorless gas, is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in America, yet many people don't know they are suffering from CO poisoning until it's too late. Because you can't see, taste, or smell it, CO can kill you before you even know it's there. Likewise, exposure to low levels over time can make you ill.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends that every home have at least one carbon monoxide alarm with an audible warning signal--like the SC07CN--installed near sleeping areas. An alarm like the SC07CN can detect the CO you can't see, smell, or taste before it causes any physical harm to you or your family.

Smoke Alarms Offer the Best Chance of Escaping Deadly Fires
Fire is a deadly threat to every household; it can strike anywhere, any time. The frightening truth is that in 2005, there were nearly 381,000 home fires in the U.S., resulting in over 16,000 casualties. Because of the very real threat of fire, it is vital that every household uses tools for fire protection. Smoke alarms like the SC07CN are the easiest, most cost-effective way to keep your family safe from fire. The more smoke alarms you have installed in your home, the more your safety increases.

What's in the Box

1 out of 5 stars False Alarm   July 18, 2010
Constant Reader (NY, NY)
We had this unit for about a year before it gave us a major false alarm indication early on a Sunday morning. These detectors all seem to be total junk but this one is especially bad. The batter tray is also very poorly designed.

5 out of 5 stars Worst Detector Ever - Maybe not!   March 23, 2010

WARNING: The detector is built with a "feature" that First Alert thought was a good idea... Allow the user to "test" the alarm with a Remote Control. Hold either the Channel or Volume key down for 3-5 seconds and the alarm will run through it's 20 second tone / voice alarm test.

We have normal size bedrooms in the house and the thing goes off constantly in a three bedrooms. It's funny when it happens to the kids, but in our room, at midnight, just pisses you off.

I called First Alert... Sorry sir, there is now way to disable the feature.

Don't waste your money. Buy something else. Ours are going into the trash.

UPDATE - UPDATE UPDATE - UPDATE

First Alert called me back... Turns out there is a way to disable the Infrared Sensor for the Remote Control, IF it was manufactured after November 2009:

1) Remove the batteries from the cradle.
2) Put the batteries back in the cradle.
3) Hold down the "Test" button and slide the cradle back into the alarm
4) Release the "Test" button AFTER the first chirp.

It worked!!! I think I'll leave the one's in the kids rooms alone :-}

Kudos to First Alert for calling me back wwith the information!

I really wanted to like this product. Voice alerts, combination smoke/CO detector, IR testing feature, AA battery operated, what's not to like? Unfortunately, as has been explained already by many other owner reviews, the fatal design flaws of this product make it not worth your money, hassle, or time. Stay as far away as possible from this product!

2 out of 5 stars Remote control in smoke detector = capital design flaw   November 22, 2009

I've owned this smoke detector for over 2 years and have finally given up on it. I only experienced one or two false alarms brought on by cooking (which I found acceptable), but it has caused me considerable hassle.

The infrared sensor responds to any signal and is extremely sensitive. I've placed the unit out of sight on top of an armoire and taped over the IR sensor, AND STILL every now and then it would respond to a bounced-off signal from my TV remote (through a gap in the casing maybe). You need a strong heart to survive a movie night like that.

I recommend the Kidde Nighthawk instead. Same feature set, no false alarms. Also looks better.

1 out of 5 stars Stay away from First Alert   November 1, 2009

The fire inspector for our city made me return the Kiddie alarms I purchased while remodeling my house, he was a big fan of First Alert alarms for some reason. He told me he would only sign off the inspection if I replaced my Kiddie alarms with First Alert. Not wanting to turn the fire inspection for the remodel into a nightmare I complied and replaced all the alarms with First Alert as he requested.

Well let me tell you, they have been a nightmare ever since. We have had 4 alarms out of the 6 in our house issue the malfunction chirp and have had to have them replaced, huge hassle. False alarms are very frequent with this detector also. It is not a fun experience to be woken up at 2am when every alarm in the house is emitting ear piercing shrieks. I have installed a Kiddie battery operated alarm near one of the First Alert alarms and only the First Alert has given off the false alarm. The frequent malfunction replace unit chirps and high amount of false alarms definitely make this alarm one to avoid. I will not be purchasing another detector product from First Alert again no matter what the fire inspector tells me.
