Read the package September 2, 2010 Boone I have returned this package because the box labelling indicated that after the ladder is used for the first time, then it must be discarded because additional use may cause death or injury. Also the instructions indicated an adult needs to come out and stabalize the ladder before any children use the ladder. How are we supposed to practice a fire escape plan if we have to order a new ladder after every practice? Also, the children may need to go out without any parents providing stabalizing support. This ladder should be not be sold if after every practice, we have to order a new one. That costs too much money.
Very nice piece of mind August 29, 2010 KR (Wausau, Wisconsin) I wish I would have gotten this years ago and I'm lucky that I haven't needed it. The construction is high quality and should work with no problems. I wish it would be easy to practice with but I can understand the reasoning for leaving it factory folded until there is an emergency. You wouldn't want to have a snagged ladder when you were in a hurry to exit. From what I can tell it would be possible to unfold the ladder and fold it back up as it just has nylon straps connecting the rungs. I'm not to worried about practicing and will take my chances. Overall I'm very glad I bought this model as it is clean and well built, giving a very nice piece of mind. It stores in a small box that just fits under the bed.
Kidde Three-Story Fire Escape Ladder August 17, 2010 Joyce (KIHEI, HAWAII, US) I haven't done a practice drill yet using the fire escape ladder. It appears to be well constructed. I hope to never need it.
poor packaging August 15, 2010 Patricia M Schwartz (Philadelphia, PA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Thanks to another review that advised opening before the emergency might happen. The packaging is terrible. The ladder is wrapped in plastic and you'd have to read the directions to figure out how to use it. In an emergency, it's just too much. I bought another ladder a few years ago for my oldest daughter going to college. It was packaged to open and put directly in the window. This one, you have to slide out of the box, pull off all the plastic and then figure out which piece goes where. not good in an emergency. I've re-boxed it with labels to make use easier.
Seems well made July 28, 2010 Sarah Davis I certainly hope that I never need to use this, but if I do, I feel confident climbing down on it. I believe some of the previous reviews complain that this ladder is for "one use only." I think there are two easy explanations for this:
1. If you do use it to escape a fire, its probably best not to use it again. You hopefully escaped early in the fire and the ladder took more heat, etc as the fire progressed. Its just safer to buy a new one.
2. Kiddie is protecting itself legally by instructing you not to open the ladder until you need it. Its pretty compactly packed and has been done that way to keep the ladder from tangling. If you do practice with it, it doesn't look that hard to pack back up. Just plan on it taking more than 5 minutes (a second person wouldn't hurt either).
I checked to make sure that the ladder was long enough (yes), but am against climbing down it until I need to. I'm 3 floors up and would rather not risk falling off the ladder until necessary. I can't see risking that with children either. Practice the escape plan, but skip the actual descent.
